 Advocacy                                                           




Advocacy is one of the four goals of the Oakville Arts Council:
The Oakville Arts Council will advocate, lobby, represent, lead, make the case for, support, educate and raise the public consciousness on behalf of art,
artists and arts organizations in Oakville.

The following is a summary of some of the accomplishments of the Oakville Arts Council during the 2006 - 2009 in the area of advocacy:

Definition of Arts Advocacy Issues
  • Sustained ongoing efforts to create a positive social and economic climate for and through the arts; building the argument for the arts, "Creative Cities Summaries" report.
  • Targeted advocacy efforts to the Town of Oakville, BIA's, Chamber of Commerce, Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC), businesses, the arts community and the public in general.
  • Advocated for the recognition of, the value of and space for local artists and the arts;
  • Involvement in the Town's Cultural Planning sesions, QEPark discussions, Kerr Street Revitalization Plan and the Strategic Planning of the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts.
Participated in the Cultural Plan development and other PRCL recommendations
  • Maintained familiarity with the cultural planning process and Cultural Plan, engaging membership in the process and consultations;
  • Liaised with the Town's Cultural Advisory Committee
    • Ken Kawall, OAC President from 2006 - 2008
    • Stacey Sinclair, OAC Board as citizen representative, 2008 to present
  • OAC representation at CAC meetings regarding a Public Art Policy;
  • Attendance at the Ontario Arts Council presentation to CAC regarding their strat plan;
  • OAC was invited to present it's new work plan at the Cultural Advisory Committee.
Profiling the Oakville Arts Council and Arts Community
  • Promoted issues and artists through the use of a variety of tools including web, social media electronic and print communications;
  • Organized and attended high profile events to promote the Arts Community and the Oakville Arts Council.
Unifying the Arts & Cultural Communities
  • Ensured representation of all sectors and worked to build bridges where required through active participation in the Arts Council Network, meetings in the Education Sector with YMCA, HIEC and through meetings with Community Foundation Oakville's Vital Signs;
  • Participated in round-table discussions with Oakville Tourism Partnership;
  • Engaged in outreach through meetings with Town Councillors, local arts organizations such as CUAS, the Chamber of Commerce, CFO, OPL, Oakville Museum, Downtown BIA, Oakville Sports Council, Ontario Arts Council, Ministry of Culture and more.
