Award Winners


 Young Artist Award winner Andrew Chown with award sponsor Peter Black, Board of Directors of Community Foundation Oakville. New this year, the Young Artist Award received more submissions than any other category.

Andrew is a student at St. Thomas Aquinas High School whose submission of a monologue written for a school drama assignment took first place in this category. The monologue is based on the story of Tony Neyshea Chambers, a death row inmate executed in 2000. Andrew has attended the Stratford Shakespeare School and is looking forward to more theatre opportunities in the future.


 Literary Artist Award winner Peter Gruner with award sponsor Diana Morrone, District Vice-President for Oakville, Milton, Acton District, TD Canada Trust.

Peter is a member of the Playwright's Guild of Canada. His play Laund-o-mat at the End of the World was a hit at the Hamilton Fringe and played at Threatre Aquarius' Best of Fringe 2009. He is currently working on his third play, Mulling Kilt Attire.

"As my children get older, I think it is important to demonstrate the importance of following your dreams. So, I write. One day, I would like them to see me realize my dream: to be a full time playwright."


 Media Arts Award winner Bartosz Pawlowski with award sponsor Andrew Patrick, Manager Professional Imaging, Epson Canada Ltd.

Bartosz is a cinematographer, recently graduated from the prestigious AFT Conservatory in Los Angeles, California. Born in Toronto and raised in Oakville Bartosz attended Iroquois Ridge High School and Sheridan ITAL where he studied Media Arts. He is currently pursuing his dream of becoming a director of photography of feature films and dramatic episodic television.



 Performing Arts Award winner Scott Laurin with award sponsor Rod Jerred, Managing Editor, the Oakville Beaver.

Scott is an 18-year-old Oakville resident who attended Holy Trinity Secondary School in Oakville who found he had a talent for music after receiving an electric guitar for his 15th birthday. He plays both electric and acoustic guitars by ear - an accomplishment that he is proud of. He is working on taking his talent to the next level and dreams of becoming a professional artist.





 Visual Arts Award winner Ixchel Suarez with Megan Whittington of the Oakville Arts Council on behalf of award sponsor W.P. Cooper, P.Eng., F.C.S.C.E. - President, Cooper Construction Ltd.

Ixchel has been an artist for 30 years, exploring diverse media including painting, photography and fibre art. Intensely interested in textiles, her weaving skills began in Mexico. She has studied there and in Europe and is Docent at the Museum of Canada and Founder of Oakville Tapestry and Painting Studios.

"My fascination for bright colours and textures, and the abstract simplicity of shapes has guided my work throughout these 28 years of working with fibres. My greatest influences are nature, music, photography, textures and the Maya Culture. They all have been in a way, my inseparable friends and inspiration."
