» Vid Ingelevics: hunter/gatherer

hunter/gatherer brings together photographs from two of Vid Ingelevics’s most recent bodies of work—one of hunting platforms scattered in the countryside, the second of woodpiles.  Capturing structures that seem to exist outside of any recorded history, his large-format photographs draw into tension the paradox of documenting without historicizing, of recording sites of collective memory without disturbing them.

» Writing Your Life

Writing Your Life

Saturday, July 25
10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Chartwell Baptist Church, 1880 Lakeshore Road West, Mississauga

Have you ever considered writing your memoirs or family history?  This workshop will introduce you to the tricks and conventions of telling true stories and will show you how to use the techniques of the novel to recount actual events.  Whether you want to write for your family or for a wider public, don't miss this seminar.

Workshop leader Brian Henry has been a book editor and creative writing instructor for more than 25 years.  He has helped many of his students get published, including our guest speaker, Ross Pennie...

Dr. Ross Pennie is the author of The Unforgiving Tides, a doctor's memoir of Papua New Guinea (Manor House Publishing).  Ross is also writing a series of medical mystery novels.  The first of these, Tainted (ECW Press) came out in April.  Ross will speak on how to turn ordinary life into dramatic material and will answer questions about how he wrote his memoir and got it published.

Fee: $41 in advance or $45 at the door.

To register, make out a cheque to Brian Henry and mail it to:

» Micah Lexier: Two parents and Three Children

Part statistician, part visual artist, Lexier makes portraits in an unusual way. Forgoing physical descriptions of his subjects in visual form, he measures and counts instead—concentrating on the numbers associated with a subject at one moment in time.  2 parents, 3 children will focus on the artist’s portraits of his immediate family.  Seen within the context of Gairloch estate, this exhibition will allow the artist to explore more fully a familial discourse. Curated by Marnie Fleming.
